Effect of Sediments Due to Earthquake Collapse on the Fatigue Behavior of Bridge Piers

After earthquake, the sediments due to collapse may pile up around bridge piers and cause a lateral compression load on the bridge piers which does not exist before the earthquake. With the vertical compression loads caused by the vehicles, the piers are under new multi-axial fatigue loading conditions. The effect of the new loading conditions on the fatigue behavior of bridge piers becomes a focus, because the new loading conditions change the mechanical behaviors of the bridge piers, therefore, impact the evaluation and reinforcement of the bridge piers. With the testing data and surface theory, the effect of the sediments is evaluated in this paper. It is concluded that the sediments will not reduce the fatigue life of the bridge piers.
