Retrofitting Effect of Longitudinal Stiffeners on the Steel Pipe-section Bridge Piers

This paper aims to investigate the retrofitting effect of longitudinal stiffeners on the steel pipe-section bridge piers. The accurate finite element formulation is employed to predict the ultimate strength and ductility behavior of the steel bridge piers with and without longitudinal stiffeners considered when they are subjected to a constant vertical load and a cyclic horizontal loading. It is found that the longitudinal stiffeners can efficiently improve the ductility behavior of steel bridge piers. Designing the bridge piers with high energy-absorption capacity can be achieved by adopting the longitudinal stiffeners. Based on the parametric studies on the slenderness ratio of the longitudinal stiffeners and radius-thickness ratio of pipe section, the formulas to predict the ultimate strength and ductility capacity of the stiffened steel pipe-section bridge piers are proposed.
