Analyses on Tunnel Failure Mode and Mechanism During Wenchuan Earthquake

It is regrettable that the peoples lives and property have suffered great losses during 5 · 12 Wenchuan earthquake in Sichuan province China. At the same time the tunnel engineering is damaged to some extent. Meanwhile, based on the tunnel engineering in Dou Jiangyan to Wen Chuan expressway, the on-site investigation and data collection have been carried on. Seismic damage is mainly summarized as follow: a) The damage of tunnel lining in portal is more serious than the inner tunnel, especially the dividing line between shallow buried and depth buried; b) The tunnel lining is seriously damaged, the road surface and tunnel invert appear a lot of cracks or uplift under the bad geological conditions (mainly the fault fracture zone);c) The side-slope of tunnel portal is prone to landslide and rockfall, so it is easily to bury the tunnel portal and arises serious the secondary disasters, d) The main reason for the tunnel damage is both destabilizing effect of surrounding rock and self-adaptive capacity of tunnel structure (the inertia force and stiffness to match capacity of surrounding rock) in the high-intension earthquake zone. The mechanism of the seismic damage has been analyzed deep from both surrounding rock and tunnel structure. All these will provide scientific criteria and beneficial references to the anti-seismic design of the underground structures for high-intensity earthquake zone.
