Anticancer activity of ethanol eztract from Pinellia ternata targeted against HepG2 human hepatoma cells

Pinellia ternate is one of the traditional Chinese medicine for anti-emetic, anti-tussive, antidepressant, sedative and anti-inflammatory. In the present study we investigated the anti-carcinogenic effect of ethanol extract from Pinellia ternata (PTE) on human hepatoma HepG2 cells. Cell viability was estimated by MTT assay. Cell cycle change was assayed with PI staining by flow cytometry. Protein expressions of cyclinD1, c-myc and β-catenin of HepG2 cells were examined by immunohistochemistry. The results showed that the growth of HepG2 cells was significantly inhibited after the PTE treatment; PTE at dose of 400 μg/ml induced HepG2 cells arrested at G0/G1 phase. The expressions of cyclinD1, c-myc and β-catenin were significantly decreased in PTE treated HepG2 cells (P<0. 05) as well. The results suggested that PTE is a promising candidate for hepatoma therapy.
