Preparation and characterization of gold coated-Fe2O3 nanoparticles

Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by traditional chemical coprecipitation method, γ-Fe2O3 NPs were then obtained after baking at a high temperature. Thiol-modified γ-Fe2O3 NPs were obtained after modification by use of 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (MPTS). A layer of colloid gold was formed on the surface of the functionalized γ-Fe2O3 NPs by reduction of Au3+ using Au-S bond, allowing the nanoparticles more stable and functional. The structure and morphology of products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and diameter distribution measurement. Gold coated γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles obtained under appropriate conditions possess a very good crystal structure and their average diameter is about 36 nm.
