Pedagogical Comments on An Integrated Single-vendor Single-buyer Inventory System with Shortage Derived Algebraically
Step 2 in Wu and Ouyangs algorithm given on page 558 provides the condition to determine the optimal integral value of the decision variable n. I do not realize why Chung makes such a statement on page 276 as They appear to take it for granted that one of the closest integers to n° is the optimum value, when n is forced to be an integer. I think that Wu and Ouyangs algorithm is perfect and hence it is entirely unnecessary that Chung uses calculus to yield equation (6) to examine the functional behavior of the joint annual total relevant cost function with respect to n. In addition, the four comments made in this note show that there is some room for improvement in relation to algebraically solving Wu and Ouyangs model so that the pedagogical advantages of model solution and problem evaluation are more eminent.
