Fostering Students Teamwork Skills

We have been investigating methods of determining the relative contributions of individual students in group-based assessments, not only in the amount and quality of work contributed to the team, but also in students teamwork skills: how students encourage and motivate each other, how individuals set a standard of work for their colleagues, and how organisational aspects (e. g. deadlines, presentations etc. ) are handled within the team. Two separate projects have been conducted, with different cohorts of students, to assess the teamwork skills of individuals within groups. The first of these uses Wikis (online collaborative web sites), which allow the assessorsto comparecontributions by individuals, and to monitor online communications within teams. The second project has implemented peer-assessment, where students give marks and feedback on their colleagues performance, which is then reviewed by the lecturer. Students have been very positive about both of these trials, and are delighted to be awarded marks for their individual performance within the groups (as well as a shared mark for the product of their group), instead of all members achieving the same marks. In both projects, we have worked towards giving constructive feedback to students on their progress in teamwork skills. This paper will present the results frominvestigations of the two methods of assessing individual contributions within groups.
