Semiotic Translation and Transformation in Source Code Development

This paper applies the Semiotic models of 23 and 24 to Software Engineering: signs underpin all IS activity. It identifies the act of translation,inherent in the production of software,but which is distinct froin the processes of transformation. The relative merits of both forms of change are discussed,with examples. A novel stream editor is proposed showing how some of the advantages of transformation can be exploited as part of an essentially translational act.
