Study on Behavior of Flow Field in Wide-Thick Slab Mold
The flow field characteristic of slab mold was studied by using water physical modeling. The study focused on the relation between upstream flow velocity and surface longitudinal crack under the condition of blowing gas. The results indicate that the main reason of surface longitudinal crack was the weaker upstream flow. The upstream flow velocity is too small to lead the temperature uniform, which results in surface longitudinal crack, and a bad influence on mold flux melting. The nozzle was optimized by means of changing the form and the area of the middle hole and side hole. The upstream flow velocity can be increased by nozzle optimization to improve the flow field of mold. Furthermore, the results of laboratory were validated by plant experiment in the paper.
