Numerical Simulation of Steel Flow Behavior in Centrifugal Flow Tundish for Continuous Casting

In this research mathematical modeling method has been used to investigate the fluid flow behavior in Centrifugal Flow Tundish. The influence of dam position on flow structure is analyzed. In addition, aiming at the needs of the practical casting operations, the flow pattern in the tundish with a hole in the dam is also studied. Simulation results showed that the rotary tangential outflow evolves into the bias flow in the distribution chamber. When the dam is close to the outlet of the rotation chamber, a large-scale circumfluence appears owing to the effect of flow asymmetry caused by the bias flow, which promotes the uniform mixing of the molten steel and improves the efficiency of the inclusion removal. However, the circumfluence feature disappears and the flow status of the molten steel deteriorates with the increase of the dam spacing. Moreover, based on the characteristics of the bias flow, it is reasonable to drill a hole on the side far away from the bias flow of the dam, since optimum flow pattern can be obtained under this condition. This computation results is benefit for the practical application.
