Dynamic 3D Heat Transfer Simulation of Continuous Casting
The dynamic 3D heat transfer equation is solved for continuous casting machines. For this calculation it is necessary to account for the heat removal due to radiation, contact between strand and rolls, the heat removal by primary cooling water in the mould and the heat removal by secondary cooling water. The steel grade properties are important variables in the heat transfer equation. To get these steel grade parameters the Gibbs free energy approach is used. Thickness changes of the strand due to e.g. soft reduction and shrinkage because of a temperature depending density are considered in the calculation. The development of the software package SIMETAL CIS Dynacs? 3D has been carried out in cooperation with voestalpine Stahl. The results of the calculation are compared with the results of travelling thermocouple measurements and the temperatures measured by two traversing pyrometers.
