Success of CDMA Telecommunications Technology in Korea: The Role of the Mobile Triangle
In 1996, mobile communications carriers in Korea began to provide code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless services, becoming the first commercial carriers worldwide to apply CDMA technology (Aley and Harrington, 2003). This successful commercialization of CDMA technology was built on a research foundation begun in the early 1990s in Korea. Before that time, CDMA technology existed only as a theoretical concept over which one small American company, Qualcomm, had patents. The joint efforts of government, research institutes, and industry in Korea transformed this conceptual technology into commercial applications. By means of this achievement, Korea is in a position to achieve a global competitive edge in CDMA wireless technology markets. Korean mobile CDMA service providers have the potential to expand their mobile markets and meet the demand of soaring domestic subscriber numbers.
