The Australian Alternative Covers Assessment Program

1. IntroductionThis paper describes the design and development of the Waste Management Association of Australias (WMAA) Australian Alternative Covers Assessment Program (A-ACAP). A-ACAP commenced in April 2006 and is a 6 year, 5 site/5 State, A$4 million research program to compare the performance of landfill phytocaps (vegetative covers) and conventional compacted clay covers (see http://www.wmaacom.au/aacap/aacap.html). It is jointly funded by the Australian Governments main research funding organisation, the Australian landfill industry, State environmental regulators and the participating universities. It is conducting the evaluation under a wide range of Australian conditions and regulatory jurisdictions.
