ACCELERATION OF NON-SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT-AND PROBLEMS OF ADEQUATE PERCEPTION
Since 1987 (time of publication Our Common Future by the World Commission on Environment and Development) the transfer to Sustainable Development is recognized by the UN and World Society at large as the only way for civilization survival. But the latest international publications focus on non-sustainable development under conditions of globalization and rapid increase of production at the cost of ecosystems consumption which is much above of their regeneration capacity. The scenarios point to risks in the future, but public perception is vague and political response is weak. There is an urgent need to arise adequate societys perception of risks of non-sustainable development. The UN Decade on Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) should be realized more effectively. Mapping, Atlas Information Systems, GIS resources are among the most efficient means to integrate Socio-Political, Economic, Environmental information on different hierarchical levels and to reflect their changes in time including scenarios of future. Most of scenarios reflect the risks of crossing thresholds, but there are still opportunities to transmit to sustainable development.
