SULFUR REMVAL FROM BITUMEN WITH SUB-AND SUPERCRITICAL WATER TREATMENT

The current energetic crisis is mainly due to the energy increasing demand (India, China etc.) and politic instability of oil-producing countries such as Iraq and Iran. Petroleum dependence could be avoided exploiting other fossil sources of fuel as coal, oil shales and oil sands. Oil sand bitumens have higher concentrations of higher molecular weight species and hetero atomic species containing nitrogen, sulfur and metals than conventional crude oils. Hence, bitumens must be upgraded before being integrated as feedstocks for refining processes.
