Variable speed motor drives are being rapidly deployed for a vast range of applications in order to increase efficiency and to allow for a higher level of control over the system1-3. One of the important areas within the field of variable speed constant frequency is direct-drive wind power system. In direct-drive systems significant simplifications result from the elimination of the gear box which has traditionally been used to interface a slowly rotating shaft with the generator shaft. The elimination of the gearbox is important for three reasons.
