Motor drive solutions for low and medium power motors in energy-efficient automotive applications
Recent legislation governing fuel consumption and pollutant emissions for passenger cars worldwide demands further reductions in fuel consumption and pollutant emissions compared to today’s permissible levels. With the increase in demand for energy-efficient vehicles, numerous pumps and fans that were traditionally mechanically driven are being replaced by electrical motors. This paper will present some examples of motor drive architectures that can be used in energy-efficient automotive applications. The proposed architectures simplify the motor drive stage by using integrated circuits and enable a reduced component count and CPU load. In addition, this paper will demonstrate an estimate of the improvement on the gas mileage obtained by applying the above solutions to fuel pumps and cabin fan applications.
