New AC-AVR based on AC-AC Transformerless Voltage converter

Two kinds of solutions are generally used to stabilize AC power sources. The classical approach consists of a low-frequency transformer with multiple taps to change the primary against secondary voltage ratio in order to maintain the output voltage as constant as possible. A second approach, based on high-frequency switching conversion, consists of a preliminary AC-DC rectification followed by a voltage source inverter (VSI) to reconstruct, using a PWM sinusoidal modulation, the stabilized voltage sinusoidal waveform required on the output of the system. The proposed circuit is an AC-to-AC converter and operates without preliminary AC-DC conversion and without use of electrolytic bulk capacitors because there is no DC bus.The converter can increase or decrease the AC voltage, maintaining the same frequency of the main source and the same sinusoidal waveform. If a linear load is connected to the output, a sinusoidal current is sunk by the main source, maintaining a good power factor as well. The innovation consists in obtaining a light compact system that is less expensive than either a traditional iron autotransformer or an electronics solution based on inverter configurations, since there is no intermediate AC-DC conversion. Moreover, the lack of electrolytic capacitors can play a key role in increasing the lifespan of the application. A suitable application for this patented circuit solution is an automatic voltage stabilizer to adjust input voltage fluctuations, guaranteeing stable sinusoidal voltage on the output.
