Energy Harvesting for Low Power Microcontrollers

Many microcontroller applications, such as remote sensing, have the requirement to be rugged, self contained, autonomous, long lived and low maintenance. To meet these requirements, it is desirable for the circuit to generate its own power from environmental sources and not rely on a battery that requires periodic replacement. This article explores energy harvesting from ambient light, heat and vibration sources to generate power for microcontroller or microprocessor circuits. Examples showing power conditioning and regulation for processors powered from solar cells, piezoelectric generators and thermoelectric generators are shown.
