A New Approach to Medium Voltage Drives
This article introduces several new MV Drive concepts, based on the multi-cell principle, all with Power Factor Correction (PFC) function in the input of the cell, in order to get pure sinusoidal input current from MV grid as well as simple transformer construction, all with perfect sinusoidal motor currents and with low dv/dt values on the motor side. Two concepts are described, 2 Quadrant drives and 4 Q drives with three-phase cell power supply, as well as single phase Cell power supplies. Cell DC Link capacitor design and service life time in the cases of single-phase and three – phase power supplies was investigated. Results are showing no need for higher capacitor banks in the case of single phase cell power supplies.
