ROLE OF COAL UTILIZATION TECHNOLOGIES FOR SUATAINABLE SOCIETY

While demand of fossil fuels has increased worldwide, the global environmental issues have been watched severely. Coal is undoubtedly recognized as one of useful fossil fuels. In order to create sustainable society in our planet, it goes without saying that development of highly efficient and ecological energy conversion technology for coal is essential. For the economically developed countries, however, they should develop not only much higher, but also more ecological coal conversion technologies. Recently, the advanced coal gasification technologies have played an important role for power generation as well as product generation. For the economically developing countries, on the other hand, co-combustion technologies of coal with biomass, combustible wastes and so forth, simple gasification technologies may be useful in the near future to construct the local sustainable society on energy. Consequently, utilization of multi fuels and formation of multi products have to be realized in future coal utilization systems, being faced with global environmental problems like earth warming, acid rain and diffusion of trace metals to the atmosphere.
