COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION SYSTEM FOR COAL QUALITY IMPACTS ON BOILER PERFORMANCE
Since coal quality has great impacts on boiler performance, it is quite effective to select coal brands and their blending condition for trouble-free and cost-minimum operation of electricity or steam generating plant. New coal quality evaluation indices for predicting practical performance on actual boilers were developed through long-term fundamental research and pilot-scale tests. These evaluation methods were compiled into computer software named “Idemitsu Coal Assessment System (I-CAS). This software provides highly accurate prediction of plant performance for specific boiler operating condition by inputting coal analysis data. Plant performance on coal handling, spontaneous heating, grinding, combustion, NOx emission, slagging, air heater deposit, EP, FGD and ash utilization are quantitatively predicted. Therefore, it is also useful for improving boiler efficiency by simulating the effects of operating and coal blending conditions. This paper describes methodology applied to evaluate coal quality impacts on boilers and major outputs from this system.
