THE EFFECT OF SORBENT SPECIFIC SURFACE AREA ON SO2 REMOVAL FROM IN-DUCT FLUE GAS TREATMENT

The processes treating sulfur oxides, specifically SO2, contained in combustion flue gas are generally classified into wet, dry and semi-dry type. The sorbent used for dry SO2 removal process is consists of calcium and sodium-based sorbents. As calcium-based sorbents, calcium carbonate(CaCO3), calcium oxide(CaO) and calcium hydroxide(Ca(OH)2) are used and as sodium-based sorbents, sodium bicarbonate(NaHCO3) and sodium carbonate(Na2CO3) are widely used. As an effort to develop dry SO2 removal process using direct injection of dry sorbent into flue gas duct(in-duct), reaction characteristics of SO2 and sorbents were analyzed by thermo gravimetric analyzer(TGA) and found out that the reactivity of sodium-based sorbents was higher than that of calcium-based sorbents. As a suitable sorbnent for dry SO2 removal from in-duct flue gas treatment, sodium-based sorbents were selected and the effect of specific surface area of sodium-based sorbent was analyzed using temperature programmed desorption(TPD) apparatus. The results showed that the reactivity of sodium-based sorbent and SO2 was increased as the specific surface area increase.
