A STUDY ON CATALYTIC GASIFICATION OF COAL FOR HIHG-YIELD HYDROGEN PRODUCTION

We have proposed a new process for high-yield production of hydrogen by steam gasification of coal with potassium carbonate. In this process, the coal is first pyrolyzed with the addition of calcium hydroxide, and then the char is gasified with steam using potassium carbonate as a catalyst. In this paper, we experimentally compared the char gasification with and without potassium carbonate, as well as the char gasification by pretreatment with and without calcium hydroxide. We found that the coal char exhibited a high reactivity at 750℃ by using potassium salt catalyst, whereas the coal char had a very ow reactivity without potassium salt even at 800℃. We are interested to observe that the char obtained with calcium additive showed a significantly higher reactivity towards the gasification with potassium carbonate. More interestingly, the gases generated from low-temperature catalytic gasification had a very high ratio of CO2 to CO. This means that catalytic gasification reaction is favorable for increasing the yield of hydrogen.
