New Suboptimal Control Design for Reentry Phase of Reusable Launch Vehicle

This paper introduces a new suboptimal nonlinear control method called theta-D approximation to design hypersonic aircraft entry longitudinal guidance law. By introducing an intermediate variable theta,the solution to HJB(Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman)equation can be expanded as a power series in terms of theta, as the result, a set of recursive algebraic equations can substitute for difficult HJB equation, which can be solved online easily. A suboptimal controller applied in this method has been designed, which implement in 3-DOF dynamics. The numerical simulation result of theta-D approximation has compared with the result of traditional LQR method. It is proved that theta - D approximation is an excellent method to solve nonlinear optimal control problem.
