Superplastic Forming of Ti-6Al-4V Pressure Vessel with Diffusion Bonding

Titanium pressure vessels in aerospace field have been used for storing liquid or gaseous propellant because of its high specific strength. The current study focuses on the development of spherical Ti - 6A1 - 4V pressure vessel with high reliability using superplastic blow forming and diffusion bonding. First, optimal diffusion bonding condition is investigated by the experimental results. Then blow forming process is analyzed to determine optimal forming process condition after predicting the thickness distribution of the initial blank which will result in the uniform thickness of the final pressure vessel. For the determination of thickness distribution of the initial blank, several types of the initial blanks are investigated with the process variables of temperature, time and pressure. And the results of analysis are compared with those of experiment after the forming process variables are determined. After manufacturing the pressure vessel, pressure loading test are also carried out to verify its design with optimum process and performance by measuring and evaluating strains and acoustic emission signals.
