Preparation of Low-cost C/C-SiC Composites Using LSI Process
The liquid silicon infiltration process(LSI)has been used as a promising route to fabricate C/C - SiC composites, however, LSI process has a drawback, i. e. the strength and roughness of the composite degradation. In this paper an improved liquid silicon infiltration process (LSI) is developed to prepare high strength, high roughness, and low cost C/SiC composite component, which can protect the carbon fibers from being eroded by silicon melt The flexural strength, fracture toughness ( KIC ) of the composite are tested. The density of the samples is determined using the water displacement method. The composition of the C/C-SiC composite is measured by X-ray diiffraction (XRD) . The fracture surface is observed with a scanning electron microscope (SEM).The results show that the C/SiC/C coating can protect the carbon fibers from being eroded by melting silicon, and the C/C-SiC composites exhibit high mechanical properties with flexural strength of 323 MPa and fracture toughness of 12.1 MPa. m1/2 at room temperature.
