Investigation of Thermal Environment and Thermal Insulating Technologies for Space Engines

The analysis of thermal radiation and thermal insulating technologies from second stage engine and sway engines to attitude control engines for a typical Long March rocket structure was conduct in present paper. Under the assumption that the thermal radiation from main engine is small enough to be omitted and thermal radiation from attitude control engines is not important due to its short working duration, the thermal radiation heat flux from sway engines was analyzed in detail. Based on the analyzing results, tests for validating thermal isolating technologies were performed in a vacuum cabin. Different covering materials and protecting schemes were tested and compared. Its shown that the analyzing results match the test data better and the heat radiation to key components such as fuel feeding pipe can be insulated effectively by covering key components with the combination of a layer of polyurethane aluminum-plate and non-alkali fiberglass.
