Orbit Variation Characteristics of the Mars Orbiters

The two most important orbit elements for low satellites are semi-major axis and eccentricity , which depend on the dissipation of atmosphere of the center body, as well as the ratio of odd harmonic term J21-1 to dynamic flattening J2.The ratios are 10-3,10-1 and 10-2 for the Earth,Moon and Mars, respectively. This paper summarizes the orbit variation characteristics of low Mars orbit, along with numerical tests. The result proves that the eccentricity can have a variation of 0.02~0.03 and for a circular orbit with initial height of 100 km,the orbiter will fall fast and end up in collision with Mars. This happens to polar orbit and when inclination decreases, the variation of eccentricity will decrease meanwhile, which turns out to be evidently different from low Moon orbit.
