Treatment of high salinity sewage in the modified MUCT Process
With the increased use of seawater, saline wastewater with increasing produced amount and generation sources needs to be treated which was the main reason to decrease the nutrient removal efficiency of normal wastewater treatment plants. In order to find out the removal efficiency of nutrient pollutants of real saline sewage and the influence of salinity shock, a lab-scale nutrient removal activated sludge system, based on the MUCT configuration, was modified to treat 10g/L saline sewage. After long time domestication of microorganism at 10g/L salinity, the TIN(total organic nitrogen) and phosphorus average removal efficiency could be achieved above 87% and 72%.The nutrient removal efficiency was also determined under different salinity shock. The results indicated that the salinity shock influences phosphorus removal efficiency much than nitrogen and organic pollutants, especially increased salinity shock.
