PREDICTION OF GREENHOUSE FRUIT VEGETABLE LEAF AREA USING RADIATION AND THERMAL EFFECTIVENESS

To quantitatively investigate the effects of both temperature and Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) on crop leaf growth, experiments were conduction in greenhouses in Nanjing and Shanghai during 2002-2004. The concept of Product of Thermal Effectiveness and PAR (PTEP) and its calculation method were proposed and a leaf area prediction model was developed based on PTEP for greenhouse cucumber (Cucumis sativus), tomato (Lycopersicon Esculentum Mill), and mask melon (Cucumis melo L. var. reticulatus Naud.). Experimental data of different varieties, sowing dates, and locations were used to validate the model. The results show that the model gives satisfactory predictions of canopy leaf area index of greenhouse cucumber, tomato and mask melon crops. Compared with the traditional GDD model (which predict leaf area based on growing degree days) and SLA model (which predict leaf area based on the specific leaf area and leaf dry weight), the prediction accuracy of this model is significantly higher than the GDD and SLA based models.
