CHANGING CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION THROUGH USE OF SELF-COMPACTING CONCRETE

During the last decade the focus in concrete construction development has to a great extent been on increased productivity, leading to reduced costs and increased speed of construction,as well as improvements in working environment. Interest in life cycle costs furthermore has highlighted aspects of durability. One response to these challenges is the development of a concrete material not needing vibration for compaction,i.e. self-compacting concrete,SCC.The key to the development came from significant advances within the chemical industry. The initial studies focused on rheological behaviour of particle suspensions containing advanced surface active admixtures, mineral fillers and viscosity agents. These studies soon expanded to extensive innovation programs incorporating basic as well as applied research, site experiments, instrumented full scale applications, development of standards and guides, information efforts as well as training programs. The use of SCC has over a decade grown significantly and is now in several countries used on a commercial basis both for in situ construction as well as in precasting. The performance offered by SCC has several attractive aspects on durability, mechanical properties and aesthetics. SCC has led to new developments in the production process,in architectural and structural design as well as on how business is organised.
