Aquaculture and Nutrition Research in Europe

1 European Aquaculture Production Europe as a whole stands as the second biggest area of aquaculture production, after Asia. The total aquaculture production exceeds 2 million tons,of which finfish represent more than 65%(Table 1).European fish farming is a dispersed and varied sector. Finfish production in Europe has seen a dramatic increase over the past three decades, with an estimated 800 000 tons produced throughout the entire European Union of 25 countries(Fig.1).If we include Norway, then the production is more than 1.2 million tons. The major finfish species produced are listed in Table 2.In the freshwater, rainbow trout remains the major species farmed. In the Mediterranean area,European seabass and gilthead sea bream are the major species.Over the past 15 years or so,the growth of seabass and seabream production has been more than double the average growth of the whole European aquaculture sector, representing the fastest growing fish farming activity within Europe.Like in many other cases, this rapid growth has also led to a relative instability of the markets.
