Current Status of Immunonutrition Research on Hybrid Striped Bass Morone chrysops z M.sazatilis
A series of experiments have been conducted to explore the effects of immunonutrients and immunostimulants on growth, immunity and resistance of hybrid striped bass,an important U.S.aquaculture species to various pathogenic bacteria.Vitamin C,vitamin E,selenium, protein quality,β-glucan from barley and brewers yeast, partially autolyzed brewers yeast,non-digestible carbohydrate-based prebiotic (Grobiotic-A),nucleotides and levamisole have been evaluated for potential use in health management of this fish. Most of these nutrients including vitamin C and Vitamin E or biochemicals including levamisole, yeast glucan and oligonucleotides have been observed to influence immune responses.Dietary supplementation of Grobiotic-A and brewers yeast enhanced survival of hybrid striped bass challenged with Streptococcus iniae and Mycobacterium marinum, two major infectious diseases of hybrid striped bass as well as many economically important fish species.Oligonucleotides and yeast glucan also showed significant protection against S.iniae, while research on optimization of dose and administration regime is still needed.Observations with hybrid striped bass have shown that research in this area is worthy to pursue further and may positively impact aquacultural production.
