Geoheritage Conservation and its Potential for Geopark Development in Asia-Oceania

Until recently, in many parts of the World including, Asia- Oceania, the conservation of some geological features arose mainly from the need to protect heritage resources that were al ready recognized by the general public, particularly by naturalists. For most part, they conserved in the context of preserving the landscape beauty for recreation or outstanding natural heritage. The idea of conservation for geological heritage that has recently been developed through systematic classification according to geodiversity, geoheritage and geosite elements has brought about a new movement toward integrated nature conservation where geological heritage resources are considered a part and parcel of overall conservation. Countries like Australia, NewZealand, China and Malaysia are actively pursuing this endeavour.
