Effect of Blast Shock on Luminescence of Diamonds

Preservation of stone integrity is the main factor which should be taken into consideration during mining process on extracting precious stones. Occurrence of fractures or their breakage in crystals leads to large losses of cost of a useful component and can bring economic efficiency of mining to nothing, therefore research of blast loads effect on extracted crystals is the most important problem. It is of interest to find criteria on which it is possible to judge about the extent of blast loads effect on crystals prior to mechanical damage gained by them. It is indicated in the report that impact shock on diamonds during blasting lead to damages in their crystalline structure. X-ray luminescence intensity decrease, in some cases by 40%, has been discovered after exposure to blast shock. The authors explain the intensity decrease by interaction of own and impurity defects with vacancies. Indeed, treatment of diamond, even short in time, at high temperatures and pressure can lead to modification of centers responsible for luminescence, formation of new absorption centers, which, as a consequence, may result in alteration of luminescence intensity. The present paper describes investigation of blast shock effect on spectra character of diamond photoluminescence.
