Ezcavation Techniques for the Left Bank Spandrel Trough at Jinshajiang River Xiluodu Hydro Power Station (XHPS)

XHPS is a world-class super hydro-electric power station second only to the Three-Gorge Project. The side slope of the left bank spandrel trough to be excavated rises as high as 210 metres. This paper conducts research into relevant excavation techniques for the dam base by addressing the following issues e.g. complex geological conditions, high technical requirements, high difficulty of excavation, and etc. The paper will provide guidelines for the improvements of similar projects in the future. Research Objective: Continuous improvement of the excavation quality of spandrel trough. Research Methodology: Confirm the optimal blasting parameters and operation methods through numerous blasting experiments. Improve the excavation techniques and process control to ensure the steady improvement of excavation quality. Results: The spandrel trough excavation project has been reviewed and honoured as a fine model project for the excavation of XHPS with its advanced excavation techniques, stable and mature technical control, and high excavation quality that meets all the design requirements. Main Conclusions: The overall project quality has reached the top-level in the world. The precise blasting techniques for the excavation of dam spandrel trough at XHPS have been formed and a system of precise blasting techniques for hydroelectric power station has been established with a series of innovations achieved in terms of scientific research, design, construction, management, environmental protection, and etc.
