Preliminary Cutting Trials of Steel Cables and Rods Using Bulk Ezplosive Charges

Cutting steel cables and steel rods with bulk explosive is a widely used technique for emergency treatment and an interested topic mergerd recently for vulnarability assessment of steel structure by explosive substances due to terrorist attack. To determine the ease of cutting steel target by bulk explosives, a series of experiments have been done in test field. The preliminary results show that the structure of steel targets and tensile strength as well are the keys for the ease of cutting. The explosive mass required for cutting the steel rod is 3 times less than that for cutting the same size of steel cable. The explosive mass required for cutting the steel cable is 1.5 to 2 times less than the recommanded by U.S. Army and much less than the recommanded in some literatures. These preliminary tests also show that the charge placement will affect the cutting efficiency. Therefore, investigation of cutting mechanism is a key to quantitively determine the cutting efficiency in the future.
