The Effect of FDI on Indigenous Innovation:Evidence from Technology Distance Threshold
The threshold effect of FDI on indigenous innovation is testified with a panel data of industries in China. We find that threshold effect does exist. The overall effect of FDI on indigenous innovation is negative and the negative effect reaches its summit in the high-tech group. But the effect turns out to be significant and positive in the moderate-tech group while the effect decreases in the low-tech group due to the lack of absorptive capacity. The results suggest that the entry of FDI into the high-tech industries should be prohibited in order to protect indigenous innovation. The entry of FDI in the moderate-tech industries could remarkably benefit from FDI and its effect is not so reliable in the low-tech group. It is human capital that remains the major driver of indigenous innovation in China, whose role is prominent in the high-tech industries.
