An Efficient Heuristic for Adaptive Production Scheduling and Control in One-of-a-Kind Production Shop Floors
High customization in one-of-a-kind production (OKP) often causes unexpected changes on production scheduling and control. Consequently, there is a big difference between the predicted production schedule and the actual production status, and the managerial staff on shop floor frequently adjust production schedule to cope with these changes. This manually adaptive production control practice in OKP companies often leads production to a chaos. The existing scheduling algorithms/heuristics, mainly for mass or batch production, are not suitable for adaptive scheduling and control in OKP. This paper presents a computer-aided adaptive production scheduling and control system, in which the critical technique is an efficient heuristic, average processing time and lever (APT-LVR) that can quickly generate a near optimal production schedule when an unexpected change occurs. Having been implemented in a local OKP company, the system demonstrates a potential to improve the production efficiency and competitiveness of the company.
