Implementation of Danielis Coil Quality Estimator (CQE) at Hot Strip Mill

Customers of the hot rolled coils are increasingly demanding better quality products with minimum variation of mechanical properties throughout the strip. Danielis Coil Quality Estimator (CQE) is a real time system that predicts and controls mechanical properties, namely Yield Strength (YS), Tensile Strength (TS), Elongation (EL), and Hardness (HV); at different positions over entire length of a coil during actual processing. CQE is developed around a series of mathematical models to keep track of the thermomechanical histories and hence the microstructure of different segments of the strip individually, which in turn is related to properties. The system is available for different grades of steel -low,medium, and high carbon, and HSLA grades. The system is validated at Beta Steel, Indiana. The accuracy of prediction is found to be ± 20 MPa for YS, ± 20 MPa for UTS, and ± 5% for EL. Apart from prediction, the system is capable of generating customized user report, archiving data for quality control, assessing process capability, addressing customer query, and investigating claims. It also reduces extensive sampling for mechanical testing. The system is currently being installed at OMK, Russia. This paper discusses on our recent implementation experience related to the architecture, functioning, and performance of DANIELI -CQE.
