The current market request shows a combined demand for API steel grades and ultra-thin gauges down to 1.0 mm and below, directly produced by the same hot strip mill. The Danieli Wean United (DWU) offers an optimum minimill layout configuration combined with the global solution to control strip dimensional tolerances and mechanical properties for very wide product mix in terms of thickness, width and steel grades. The ultra-thin gauge rolling requests more attention regarding the thermal crown growth during rolling, work roll soundness and life, work roll cooling,accuracy of crown & flatness control, flying set-up of the finishing mill. The API steel grades requests a powerful rolling mill, high control of material temperature and a proper reduction ratio between the slab and final strip thickness. To improve the rolling capacity of ultra-thin gauges, new rolling practices namely semi-endless rolling and ferritic rolling together with innovative equipment to be installed on the hot strip mill for profile and flatness control, are required.Meanwhile, to reach the mechanical properties of API steel grades are requested an accurate temperature setup and a bar reduction strategy through the length of the hot strip mill.
