De Novo Ezon Acquisition during Human Evolution

BackgroundHumans have acquired many distinct features compared to chimpanzees and other great apes 1.Gain of such human-specific traits must be initiated and consolidated by successive genetic changes and natural selection. We developed a hioinformatics method for systematic identification of the human exons that had been introduced after the divergence of humans and chimpanzees.Data & MethodsFirst, we collect genomic fragments that are only present in the human genome compared to the chimpanzee and the rhesus macaque genomes by analyzing the UCSC Genome Browser Database 2. Then, we check whether the newly inserted fragment includes the sequence of an exonic region of the human spliced transcripts.
