Prediction of translation initiation site for microbial genomes

BackgroundAccurate prediction of translation initiation site (TIS)is crucial for the predictions of operon, promoter, signal peptide and small noncoding RNAs.Remarkable progress has been made recently, but there still exists two limitations: 1) most methods involve a number of assumptions about TIS-related features, and consequently parameters optimized for some genomes are sub-optimal for others 1, and 2)the prediction performance is found to show some degree of dependence on the set of initial annotation2. Here, we report a new method that overcomes the two limitations.
