Characteristic analysis of miRNA precursors in metazoan species
BackgroundMiRNAs are a class of important endogenous noncoding RNAs that play important roles in posttranscriptionai regulation of gene expression. Characteristics are essential to miRNAs identification. However, only a few studies are reported on miRNA features1-3. Here, we analyze all experimentally validated metazoan pre-miRNAs comparing with other RNAs including tRNAs, rRNAs and mRNAs.Materials and methods2729 pre-miRNAs downloaded from the miRBase database are compared with 350 tRNAs, 140 RNAs and 500 mR.Nas from metazoan species. Secondary structures of pre-miRNAs are classified into two types: Type I with only one hairpin loop, and Type Ⅱ containing multiple loops. Statistical analysis is executed separately on each type of RNAs at the level of primary sequences and secondary structures, where the mMFE is a new criterion proposed in our study.
