Glutamate Receptor Ion Channels and their relatives in Bacteria

BackgroundVoltage-gated and ligand-gated ion channels are used in eukaryotie organisms for the purpose of electrochemical signaling. 1 There are prokaryotic homologues to major eukaryotie channels of these sorts, including voltage-gated sodium, potassium, and calcium channels, and Ach-receptor and glutamatereceptor channels. 2, 3 Compared to their eukaryotic homologues, most prokaryotic ion channels, however, remain functionally unknown. A major question is whether the function in prokaryotes is electrochemical signaling between prokaryotic cells,or whether they have other functions such as regulation of secretion, and such homeostatic functions as osmotic balance and regulation of pH-or all of the above.
