Dao: a novel programming language for bioinformatics

BackgroundProgramming has been playing a major role in the bioinformatics field, where programming is indispensable for many daily tasks requiring text processing and data analysis, as well as for building up bioinformatics facilities such as bio-databases and bio-softwares. The most widely used programming languages in bioinformatics are probably R and Perl, followed by several other languages such as Python, Java and PHP etc. R and Perl are popular in this field mainly due to the fact that there are a large number of modules/packages available for using. However it is also well known that these two languages have complicated syntax and steep learning curves, due to the lacking of simple, consistent and orthogonal syntax and semantics in the language. In an attempt to create a powerful but simpler programming language, the author has developed a novel programming language named Dao 1,2. It is considerably simpler than the above mentioned languages, yet includes several important features which could make it very suitable for bioinformatics applications.
