Research on Environmental Flow of Plain Rivers of the Haihe River System

Under the influences from both natural factors and human activities, the Haihe River system has been evolved into a state with water shortage caused by both resource exhaustion and pollution since 1950s, just as a saying goes all parts of the rivers are drained up and polluted, which has severely destructed the ecological environment of the river course and the wetlands. One of the key issues concerning the rehabilitation of the ecological environment around the plain rivers of the Haihe River system is how to restore the ecological flow process of the vital ecological systems such as river course and wetlands. In this research, IHA and Tennant methods were adopted for calculating of the environmental flows in the plain rivers of the Haihe River system, based on which an approach is proposed for restoration of the natural hydrological rhythm to meet the target put forward by Haihe River Water Resources Commission, i.e. the rehabilitation of the hydrological ecology of the plain rivers of the Haihe River system to its previous status in 1970s.
