Consulting Pupils on the Assessment of their Learning
Assessment practice is a critical dimension of teaching and learning and also fundamental for building sustainable learning society, because not only can it evaluate the outcomes of teaching and learning, and affect student motivation but it can also in its longer term consequences influence equity and social cohesion in society. Most of the time, children and young people, as learners and test takers do not have a say in the discourses or outcomes of educational assessment, and, within current research of childrens rights, this lack of voice may inhibit their learning motivation and constrain their contributions to the learning communities in which they participate. This paper will draw upon research undertaken in the UK on consulting pupils on the assessment of their learning (CPAL) and add a project to extend this work which is taking place on consulting students in China on high stakes assessment. In a globalised world, as researchers we should share our theories and practices, that is why the CPAL project and its extended empirical studies in China are presented here in this international conference.
