Why should you develop your middle managers?-Middle Leadership :the key to leadership capacity
Since 2002 when the National College of School Leadership (NCSL) began a national development programme, Leading from the Middle, the development of subject and pastoral leaders has been an important part of staff development in many English schools. This has reached new impetus with the necessity for succession planning; there is a real possibility that there will be a shortage of head teachers in the near future. This problem is not only in England. This diagram shows the age range of teachers in maintained schools in England and state schools in the US and Germany in 2007. The bulge of teachers retiring in the next ten years is causing concerns.
